SUPPORT

Losing a baby or child of any age is perhaps the most traumatic event a parent can go through. When the death is sudden and unexpected, feelings of shock, disbelief, guilt, anxiety and sadness are experienced. While they are all part of the grieving process, parents will need all the help and support they can get.

THE FOLLOWING ARE SUPPORT SERVICES OFFERED BY THE IRISH SUDDEN INFANT DEATH ASSOCIATION:

National LoCall helpline -- ISIDA's support services include a national low cost helpline which is monitored throughout the day and calls are responded to by bereaved parents who are trained befrienders. This service is confidential - 1850-391-391

Remembrance Services -- Remembrance services are held annually throughout the country. They are open to all bereaved parents and newly bereaved families are specifically invited.

Counselling for individuals and couples -- counselling can help bereaved parents work through the difficult emotions experienced after the loss of their child

Counselling for children -- Children also experience all the feelings associated with the loss of someone special. We provide one to one counselling, or group work to enable children to work through the emotional and psychological effects of loss.

Book of Remembrance -- the Book of Remembrance commemorates babies and young children who have died suddenly and unexpectedly. Families are provided with a replica of their child's entry.

Support groups-- the support group offers parents a space to share their loss with other parents who have lost a child expectedly. The group process helps overcome the emotional isolation that is a common feature of the grieving process.

Befriending Service-- The Befriending service is on offer to bereaved parents. Befrienders are themselves parents who have attended bereavement groups and following this have been trained in basic listening and befriending skills.

Biannual Newsletters-- Providing a forum for bereaved families and friends to share their personal reflections and experience with updates on research, education, current ISIDA activities and future plans.

Poetry & Prose books -- 'Remembering' - this booklet is a collection of all the poems/stories published in ISIDA newsletters over 21 years 1976-1997.
