The National Paediatric Mortality Register provides accurate up-to-date information on SIDS in Ireland.

Guidelines for notifying the register when a sudden infant death occurs

The aims of the register are:

  • To provide bereaved families with up-to-date information on SIDS & available support services

  • To educate the public and health care professionals about SIDS and ways of reducing the risk

  • To provide professionals with guidelines to assist them in caring for bereaved families

  • To provide a national register of all sudden, unexpected, deaths for which cause of death is not identifiable following a post mortem examination, in the infant population

  • To identify and categorise all deaths in children from birth to 2 years of age in the Republic of Ireland

  • Collect comprehensive epidemiological data on all cases of sudden unexpected deaths in infancy

  • We are members of SIDS International and the European Society for the prevention of infant death.
